１７日（月）は島の北東部にあるＰｉｕｌａ Ｃａｖｅ Ｐｏｏｌと言うところに行きました。海岸から３０ｍくらいしか離れていないところに真っ青なきれいな真水を湛え、プールのようになったところがあります。崖の下が洞穴になっており水面下のトンネルで別の洞穴につながっていて、泳いで通り抜けスリルを味わいました。ここで泳ぐのは大変気持ちがよく、他の観光客も入れ替わり泳いでいました。崖の上は赤い屋根のきれいな教会が建っていて、前日の日曜に来ても泳げませんでした。
１８日（火）はアピアの裏山のほうに「宝島」「ジキル氏とハイド氏」などを書いたスコットランド出身の小説家Ｓｔｅｖｅｎｓｏｎの大きな邸宅が博物館になっているところがあり見学に行きました。標高約４００ｍの裏山へ１時間かけて上ると見晴らしのいいところにStevenson氏のお墓がありました。
夜、隣のヨットＥｘｐｅｄｉｔｕｓのMikeさんＧａｙさん夫妻を招待してＫＩＮＧ ＢＥＥで夕食を食べました。夫妻はオーストラリア・アデレードでフェロセメントで３７フィート艇を自作して１９７７年に完成させ、ホーン岬を越えてのイギリス行きなど世界のあちこちを回ってきたそうです。僕たちがこれから行くトンガを通って来たばかりとのことで、トンガについていろいろ聞いて、ガイドブックの電子コピーをいただきました。
On Oct.17, We enjoyed swimming at Piula Cove Pool where naturally made clear fresh water pool exists only 30m from sea coast. two openings of caves are connected with an under water tunnel. It was thrilling to swim through it. Over the cliff behind the caves ,there was a beautiful church.
On Oct.18, we went to the Stevenson's Museum, which used to be his resident. He wrote "Treasure Island"or other novels here.
.In the evening , we invited Mike and Gay Lewis of neighboring yacht Expedites for dinner on KING BEE. They made 37feet yacht by ferrocement completing in1977.and have cruised all over the world including voyage to UK passing the Cape Horn.
Since they came thru Tonga, we learned a lot from them. They kindly gave us a electronic copy of Cruising Guide of Tonga.
